Shiba Tatsuya is back in "Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei - Tsuioku Hen" (henceforth tsuioku-hen) and better than ever, as if a teasing interlude for a third anime season.
This time we take a stroll down memory lane straight to Okinawa and follow Tatsuya and his imouto's, Miyuki's, adventures in a time when their bond holy smokes

Where am I? What happened? It feels like I just woke up from a really weird dream... Ah yes, I was writing a review of "Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei - Tsuioku-hen" (henceforth tsuioku-hen). Damn and by the looks of it I already wrote extensively about the subject. Guess it's time to talk about each componenet.
Sound (music): matured -- the first season of Rettousei had some grating pieces among a list that always subtly reminded me of ghost in the shell. In tsuioku-hen, there's nothing memorable to listen to, but the music fits the action very well, always carrying an oriental-futurist tone.
Sound (seiyuu): great -- Hayami Saori as Kaede Takagaki as Shiba Miyuki is a mixed bag. The least I expose myself to her work, the more I enjoy it. The only time I couldn't identify her as Kaede Takagaki playing another character was Shuumarsu no Izetta. Everywhere else, she's got the same tone. There's nothing particularly awful about that, but, to me, her voice doesn't sound unique enough for her to be in that echelon of seiyuu who I can overlook for using the same tone. Like Kikuko Inoue!
Kikuko Inoue, my goodness. She's just like Yumi Hara: a voice I'd marry. Most people project their voice from their throat. Good orators use their diaphragm to project their voice. And then you have Kikuko Inoue, who projects her voice straight from her womb. Her voice is pure sex. I don't understand how people can call Aoi Yuuki as Shuten Douji the "ASMR demon". Frankly, I don't listen to ASMR, but if Aoi Yuuki is the ASMR demon, Then Kikuko Inoue is the ASMR goddess. And then Chiwa Saitou!

Putting aside my preferences, Tsuioku-hen has a great cast all around. I'm particularly fond of Tooru Ookawa (as Kazama) and Tarusuke Shingaki's (as Sanada) performances. The rest of the group doesn't show up, but the whole military group in Rettousei is voiced splendidly. Overall, actually, the casting is excellent.
Animation: good -- a fair share of nice action sequences and really nice animation of characters. DID YOU SEE THAT SLIGHT HEAD TURN MIYA-SAMA DID BACK THERE THAT WAS AMAZING AND SHE DOES IT LIKE FIVE MORE TIMES SPRINKLED ALL
I think I spaced out for a moment. I was talking about animation. It's very well animated in my honest opinion.
Presentation: quintessentially Japanese -- This is something I'd like to elaborate on at a later date. Likely in a review of Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei proper, rather than in a review of a side-story. Sound and motion come together to create something that's unequivocably created for the Japanese, by the Japanese. This pulls me in even further, like a tourist in Kyoto.
Art direction: good -- Nothing egregious of note. Except for 3DCG vehichles. Screw 3DCG. There's other 3DCG but it's competently disguised, but 3DCG vehichles stand out like an ink smudge in an otherwise perfect painting. Screw 3DCG.
Story: -- follows the usual Rettousei formula. The fact that it's taking so long to get new animated content plays in Rettousei's favor, because the structure never overstays its welcome. Plus, there's enough side stories and world building to keep you interested. Tatsuya is a role model.
Subtitle quality: enraging, ENGLISH DOES NOT HAVE THE HIERARCHICAL CONVENTIONS OF NIHONGO. STOP TRYING TO FIT A CIRCLE IN A SQUARE PEG.
You can remove and alter some things. I can concede on some points. Actually, maybe I shouldn't. Give them an inch and they take a mile.
Iyada. You kisamara will not get away with it.
Overall -- "Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei - Tsuioku-hen" is a great watch, whether or not you're familiar with the rest of the anime/LN's.
Ideal seasons to watch in:
Summer
Summery Okinawa, playing in the sea. Bright blues and clear skies. Light clothing and refreshing tea. School's out in time for heated vacances.
This anime will make you feel like turning on the fan.
"Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei - Tsuioku-hen" is a great way to start 2022. It has much more qualities than it has flaws.
If you're looking for some cool action, you could do much worse. All in all, I can say that my final score for this anime can
